View Full Version : Shoe Envy!

I'm not entirely certain if this is the right forum (very sorry if it isn't...) but here goes...

Am I the only one left envying all the cute shoes the rest of the world gets to wear?

I practically salivate at the sight of a cute pair of high heels, but they're completely out of the question... If I try them on, I can barely walk - my ankles are just too wobbly and unstable. I've thought about wearing them with my ankle braces, but the things are too bulky to fit into many pairs, and they ruin the effect anyhow. My EDS afflicted grandmother managed to learn to walk in them, but her feet were completely ruined as a result.

Strappy sandals too are off limits - they've got an annoying tendancy to wear through my skin. Where I live, they're practically a uniform for anything dressier than flip-flop attire. And it's not so much that I want to go along with every trend, but they're soooo cute.

I'm sure some of this is the forbidden fruit phenominon, but has anyone else had issues with this? How do you get over the urge to wear shoes that'll kill your feet? I'm just about at the point of finding someone to custom-make a pair of boots for me - spike heels with boning or something to brace my ankles.

Me! I can't walk in heels very well! Especially the skinny heels...if they're wider I'm ok but not the greatest lol. I hate it but guess I just have to deal with it. :sad

MEMEMEMEME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

I could wear wider heels in high school but now I can't wear ANY and there are so few shoes that fit my AFOs...

I can't wear clogs or flip flops either. i wear orthotics and AFOs all the time. It sucks!

I told Mom that I finally need to let it all go...so I only kept the heels from graduation and gave her my clogs. So that leaves me with sneakers, Crocs and Mary Janes.

But...because i wear kids shoes...i did find flip flops with a heel strap that i can wrap around my brace...so i'm getting some of those.

I don't feel pretty anymore.

Ah, wow, this is a tough one to answer.
I can wear heals every now and then, when my ankles are acting, Ok.

But sometimes, I can't and it gets fusturating cause not only do I have weak ankles and weak (practically see through) skin bu I also have big feet. Size 11 in Womens. Eeek! I know. But anyways, I do have this problem and I am along with you Steph.

It is tough to not follow the trends especially when the things being worn are uber cute but very uncomfortable for people like ourselves.

I have horrible shoe envy. I am a total shoe addict, or at least I used to be. I had one heck of an adorable shoe collection of all the pretty stylish heels.

I now am down to a couple pairs of heels, but lately I've been really wanting to wear them again. For me its not so much my ankles that are a huge problem, its my knees that cause me the most troubles.

I just bought the cutest pair of black stiletto heels that are kinda mary jane style, and I'm totally in love, but I can't wear them often, and I actually haven't been able to wear them yet cause its been so darn icy out and I have a hard enough time walking with regular shoes on, so I figure I shouldn't push it.

I have to go to a wedding in a couple weeks and I'm hoping that my back will be ok enough for me to wear them, but I'm figuring if its not, I'm still gonna wear them anyways, my dress just won't be the same without them.

I love heels and my legs look so much prettier and longer when I wear them. It makes me feel very pretty and sexy to wear them, and I miss the days of feeling like a desirable gal. :sad024:

That happens to me all the time, mostly with sandals or clogs and such; I get it more on the top of my feet, though.

It's a lot less of an issue if I wear socks with them, but then what's the point of sandals if I have to wear socks?

Shoes wear my skin out too. I have many, many scars on my feet from shoes just kinda ripping my feet apart.

I got the CUTEST sandals today...it's taken a long time but they are perfect. White and silver...they have rubber bottoms, no heel, velcro strap and are dressy!!!! I had gone to the Children's Place for dress and pants and found them...and the top band doesn't even touch my foot lol :D I shall post pics :D

LOL I think its so funny that you can fit into clothes at children's place...I know that your tiny, but I guess since I've never seen you in person I have a hard time imagining how small you actually are.

Wow...yes you are. I can see how being able to wear children's clothes has its benefits, but I would think it would kinda be a pain for certain things that you might need if they don't make those kind of things in children's and you don't fit into the clothes/shoes in adult sizes.

I wish I could say I wear that small of clothing.
:(

I wear about medium to large shirts. And 5-9 jeans.
Also, I have size 11 shoes. :(

Oh gosh I do!
I love shoes! But I don't really have a problem with walking since i rarely walk (wheelchair), but I feel ridiculous wearing high heels in my chair. The straps also wear through my skin, I have scars all over my feet.

xxBrittany
11-26-2008, 09:55 PM
Awh, I am sooo sorry to hear that.
The straps rubbing your skin is nothing new to me, it's so incredibly painful.

I wish we had likes some kinds of awesome clothing line that adapted to our needs.

Now THAT would be awesome!

I can't walk in heels at all. I don't have any balance and I can't support myself. I hate it because I'm quite short anyway and all my friends are taller than me. They can all wear heels which makes them taller too.

xxBrittany

Well, I suggest buying cute flats. Even if you can't wear heels it's no big deal. :P

You can still be fashionable, etc wearing something more safe & comfortable.

So much shoe envy! But I wear US women's 13, so it's even worse. I go to the store, look at the racks and racks of cute normal-sized flats, look at the single shelf of nun shoes in my size, and go home. (On the up side, Nordstrom Rack has my lifelong support, as they carry pretty shoes in my size.) Most shoes also give me blisters. I can't wear many heels either. I have a pair of shoes I used to wear clubbing (despite the fact that I couldn't walk in them), and I wore the bottoms out so unevenly I stopped being able to wear them. I have high arches, so my feet/ankles overextend in the opposite direction from normal EDSers. It still stinks. However, I find that if you have a classic, simple pair of black shoes, you can make a fashion statement with socks/tights, and look like you intentionally wore the plain shoes to avoid clashing with your legwear. :)

haha envy isnt the word for it,
its coming up to my prom in a few weeks and everyone is talking about how beautifull there heels are and i cant wear any, all my life i have worn braces with anything that they would fit in which it really clumpy boots as i got older and people started noticing that i was wering these shoes in the middle of summer it really put me down so i started wearing shoes that were in fashion but deffo not heals but also as i got older my feet got worse and worse. this resulted in my achilles tendon tighten up to try and straighten out my foot but its just caused my bones to bash together,
and now its coming up to prom with me in a aircast and cruthes and still not knowing which shoe im going to wear to prom lol.

aw! does anyone have big feet? i have womens size 11! i have a terrible time finding heels. however, even though i wore heels, i took them off as soon as the dancing started..hahaha. So I spent $60 on shoes that I wore for 5 minutes. Splendid. Atleast I was fashionable!

Dev- hope something works out for you hun! :) Wish there was something I could do!

I don't know about Australia :(

I'm getting prescription shoes! And they're ADORABLE. They're green mary janes with a flower on them. I'm so excited it's not even funny.

I'm a kids 4 but with my new AFO I've been wearing womens 6 (36 in Europe for both sizes)

Wow! However, I think AUS sizes are different here.
I wear a size 11 in womens which is the same to a 9 I believe in Men's sizes.

I hate having big feet!

I don't really have trouble finding shoes. I have small feet (and small just about everything); I wear size 5.5-6.5 shoes, depending on the brand and style. I never wear heels because I'm just too clumsy. I have orthotic inserts, so that limits my selection a little bit, but if a pair of shoes doesn't fit my orthotics then I just deal with it. I have a pair of Chacos (strappy summer camp-ish sandals) that kind of rub when I start wearing them after a while of not wearing them, but they have great arch supports and I'll wear them EVERYWHERE in the spring and summer.
I've found that Blowfish shoes are typically wide enough for my orthotics and they're SO cute. I got three pairs for Christmas (two pairs of flats and a pair of ankle length boots) and I've worn the boots nearly every day since I got them.

xxBrittany

You girls are so lucky you have smaller feet, because I think it's easier to find smaller sizes like 5's or 6's in Womens than a size 11. *Sigh*

I've never heard of Blowfish before, I'll have to check them out!

ReineDeLaSeine14

5's are very hard to find...I now have huge plastic AFOs so I now wear a 6-7 in Women's...I have like five pairs of shoes now.

FootSmart is great...they have tons of shoes in several widths that accomodate AFOs and inserts

xxBrittany
06-13-2011, 10:52 PM
I will definitely have to check FootSmart out! Glad you are happy with your findings, Steph!

SophieeBabessxo
08-18-2011, 01:34 PM
That sounds great for anyone! Definitely if they have inserts in them!
I wear inserts in pretty much all my shoes, just so I can walk a little bit further before my feet and ankles hurt. I would recommend anyone with EDS or HMS to buying inserts :)

xxBrittany
08-26-2011, 08:44 PM
So lately, when I need to dress up and the occasion is known for "heels", I've been buying the heels that sort of look like boots that support your ankles, and even though they are not comfortable a hundred percent, my God, it keeps me from my ankle dislocating and falling on my face.
